    1/6th Plate Tintype Photograph showing
a Civil War Soldier. There is an identification inside of the case. We had a very difficult time trying to make this out. We tried hard to put a name on this soldier. We ended up with some possibilities, so here they are...
The inscription looks like. #1 First word looks like Miss (Mississippi or Miss) #2 Second Line, Fury Ann (possible
    phonetically
spelled, but really Ferdinand or even Lucy Ann, but I don't think that's an L.). #3 Third line Shubber (Could be Scheuber/Shubber/Shuber). #4 Fourth line age 37 years or 27. #5 Fifth Line, Taken Aug 17, #6 Line, 1864. You will have to look at all the photos we show to see the letters at different angles (the u in Shubber doesn't show in some, but it's there). So, with this to go on, we were able to find a Ferdinand Shuber enlisted in the 12th Regiment Tn. Mounted Infantry (Union). We also found a F. Sheuber enlisted with the 12th Infantry, Mississippi, and a F. Schuber enlisted in the Lafayette Artillery,
    Louisiana
    .
Researching, these men, and their families, all showed that they were 1st or 2nd, generation immigrants from Germany. We think they probably had trouble communicating the proper spelling of their names when enlisting and most likely were not able to read or write very well. So, with that in mind, we are leaning toward the Sheuber in Mississippi, and we think Fury Ann sounds like Ferdinand, so that's what they wrote, the best they could. We couldn't find any northern soldiers that were even close. Finally we Gave Up! We know that someone will know if this soldier has on a Confederate or a Union uniform.
