    Description

Rare and original, 1860's Signed and Inscribed CDV Photograph of a United States Navy Civil War Acting Assistant Surgeon Dr. George Cowles Osgood taken on the Mississippi at Cairo, Illinois. This period, albumen Photograph measures approx. 2 1/2” by 4” including its original, square corner, gold rule border, Photographer’s Card Mount.
This is a vignette bust portrait of Dr. Osgood wearing a frock coat with shoulder bars that identify him as an Assistant Surgeon. The mount is signed and inscribed on the reverse "Yours Truly/Geo. C. Osgood" and dated "July 20, 1865." The back of the mount also carries the mark of Cairo, Illinois photographer “Parker's City Gallery” as well an area of thinning that attests to the fact that the once affixed Tax Stamp was removed at some time in the past.
This original CDV Photograph came to us from the legendary Brown Water Navy Collection of Richard B. Cohen.
George Cowles Osgood (1838-1913) was Acting Asst. Surgeon, 2/26/63; Discharged, 1/19/66. A Harvard Medical School student, Osgood was posted aboard the ironclad USS Chillicothe during the failed Yazoo Pass Expedition. During the Red River Expedition that commenced in March 1864 he was the attending surgeon when the ship's commanding officer, Lt. Joseph P. Couthouy, was mortally wounded by rifle fire on April 3. The war over, Osgood was detached from USS Chillicothe and posted to Mound City in July 1865 when this photograph was taken. After the war Osgood became a successful physician and apothecary in Lowell, Mass. Many years later in 1885 he composed a detailed description of the medical maladies that befell Brown Water Navy personnel in a lengthy eleven page letter to the Pension Bureau.
This rare and original, albumen CDV Photograph is in excellent condition. The Photograph exhibits sharp focus, strong contrast and rich, warm tonality. Both the Photo and the mount are clean and crisp although there is some thinning on the reverse of the mount as described above.
