Description
Antique French Cognac or wine Demijohn Bonbonne with original protective crate and straw.Approx 13.5” x 10”
The tag hanging on the side says TM BELGIQUE 153 on one side and an Arbellot Cognac label on the other (see photos).
The term demijohn or Dame-Jeanne as it's known in France, refers to any glass vessel with a large body and small neck. They were used to transport wine directly from the Chateaux vineyard to the wine seller or restaurant. Or when a cognac distiller wanted to stop the maturation of the cognac, it was transferred to a glass demijohn.
There are many glass demijohn bottles for sale today, but few still have the original wood/straw/whicker protection.
