Description
This is a mid Meiji era (c.1890) antique Japanese squareObon
(serving tray) made of hand carved cryptomeria wood followed by multiple layers of black lacquer. Obon are trays used to carry small dishes and tea cups. It has a raised gold design (
makie
) of a young pine sapling (see pictures).
It measures 12" square by 2" tall (31 x 5 cm). Having been used lovingly for over a century and havaing been protected by its original kiri wood presentation box, with exception to some minor signs of past use (see enlarged pictures), this antique obon remains in
very fine condition
. The original kiri wood protective presentation box measures 13" square by 3" high. (33 x 7.5 cm).
