Jared Augustine Smith
graduated from the U. S. Military Academy at West Point in 1861,and was commissioned as 2nd Lt.
US Army 1st Battalion Engineers
on June 17, 1862.   The oldest and most decorated engineer battalion in the US Army, the battalion earned
ten campaign streamers
in the Civil War.  It fought at
Antietam
, bridged the Rappahannock River six times at
Fredericksburg
, breached fortifications at
Petersburg
and was present at the
surrender of General Lee at Appomattox
.  Smith was Breveted 1st Lt. for gallantry and meritorious service at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia, promoted Capt. on June 25, 1864 then to Major for
gallantry and meritorious service in the War of the Rebellion
.  Smith remained in the Army after the Civil War promoting through the line to the rank of
Brig. General before retiring in 1903.
