The Nes-Silicon Steel Company was formed in the early 1870s at Rome, New York to manufacture rolled steel using a patented process developed by Dr. Charles M. Nes, of York, Pennsylvania. The rights to the patented process were purchased by the Nes-Silicon Steel Company to use at their mill in Sandusky, Ohio. The addition of silicon in the iron ore smelting process improved the electrical properties of steel, increased fatigue strength and ductility, resulting in rolled steel that was hardened and tempered.
