SOME HISTORY BEHIND THE POSTER
THIS LISTING IS FOR MAY 15TH POSTER "TOWARD A GENERAL STRIKE"
Street Wall Journals
, Vol. 1, No. 2
New York; May 1970
Large posters, dated May 13, 15, and 21, 1970. With headlines "
Why We Strike
", "
Toward a General Strike"
and "
THE PANTHERS: history as repression...repression as history...
" published newspaper broadsides. Produced by the Committee to Defend the Panther 21.
The Committee to Defend the Panther 21 was formed in early 1970 to raise money to defend the twenty-one Black Panthers who had been accused of conspiracy to murder New York policemen. The name of the newspaper was a reference to the paper's opposite ideology to that of the Wall Street Journal. These broadsides were primarily distributed at Columbia University during the strikes of 1970.
